The name, Podiatrist, originated in North America, and has become the accepted term for all practitioners of podiatric medicine worldwide. Podiatrists are the only medical professionals who exclusively specialize in treating the foot and ankle. In the United States, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) are physicians/surgeons who treat the lower extremities, which primarily entails the feet and ankles.
